Starting a Mortgage Company but I need to know when the Hobby Rule makes me unable to deduct the loss?

The IRS has a “Hobby Rule” make money 3 out of 5 years.
What happens if you lose money 4 of 5 years? or lose 5 of 5 years. If you own a yacht charter fishing business, that is one thing but what about a startup company like Mortgage that is not fun!

The hobby loss rules are not hard and fast rules. The IRS leaves a lot of room for interpretation in determining whether a business is considered a “hobby” subject to the hobby loss rules. You really have to look at the facts and circumstances of each particular case to see whether the IRS will consider the business a hobby or a true business. Some of the facts they may consider is:

1. Do you have a storefront (i.e. separate business location) and not working from your home?
2. Is this your sole source of income or do you have a “day job” to pay the bills?
3. Does the business require a specialized license (i.e. real estate license or certification) or specialized knowledge?
4. Is the business set up as a “true” separate entity (also covers separate business location, separate business accounts, DBA license, paying payroll taxes, etc.)?

Weddings With A Twist

Weddings With A Twist Planning a Destination Wedding? Kick those nuptials up a notch by planning a Vegas wedding with a twist. Las Vegas offers way more than a drive thru at the famous Wedding Chapel with a minister dressed as Elvis conducting the ceremony. Most of the major resorts offer wedding, vow renewals and commitment ceremonies with a little special twist. Some of them downright quirky.

Couples can wed on a pirate ship with buccaneers at Treasure Island, have a biker wedding at the Chopper Chapel, or include among their guest list celebrity wax figures as Madame Tussauds. The Las Vegas strip is sprinkled with hotels with city themes. That means you can tie the knot on a special white gondola floating down the Grand Canal at the Venetian Hotel. Or wed on the observation deck of the Eiffel Tower. Or travel back to medieval times and hold a 16th century wedding at the Excalibur Hotel’s Canterbury Wedding Chapel. You can be the King and Queen while family and friends dress as the royal court. “Merlin the Magician” is the officiating minister.

Hotels are not the only ones offering that “certain something” to make your wedding unforgettable. Little Chapel of the Flowers (littlechapel.com) offers a, fun and fabulous adventure you’ll never forget. You can exchange vows in the awe-inspiring natural beauty of the Grand Canyon or have a touching ceremony aboard the Lady of the Lake Yacht.

Wedding packages range from $199 at Madame Tussands to $8,000 at some of the stand alone chapels. The price, of course, depends on how elaborate you want to go. But most packages averaged about $1500. For more information contact the Las Vegas Wedding Connection at www.lvweddingconnection.com or any of the hotels directly.

The Ultimate Theme Park Rides in Lancashire

Lancashire boasts two of the UK’s favorite theme parks: Camelot Theme Park and Pleasure Beach, Blackpool. While Camelot is geared toward tamer adventures than Pleasure Beach, it has its share of thrill rides that are worth trying.

The Whirlwind at Camelot Theme Park in U.K experience is very much as its name describes. Sitting back to back with three other riders in your spinning carriage, you zip along the track, for the thrill of zooming and twirling at the same time. You must be at least 1.2 metres tall to ride.

Excalibur 2 is another ride at Camelot Theme Park. It is one of those rides that resembles an egg beater turned upside down. A spinning carriage rises higher and higher in the air, fraying your nerves and making your heart leap. The minimum height to ride Excalibur 2 is 1.4 metres.

The Galleon Ships at Camelot Theme Park are giant swinging boats that are guaranteed to thrill. Riders must be at least 1 metre tall to ride. For the smaller children, the Junior Galleon ride is perfect. For this ride, riders must be less than 1.4 metres in height to ride.

The Rack is a tortuous ride at Camelot Theme Park that is on split levels. It gives you a bird’s eye view of the park and well beyond. The only question is whether you can keep your eyes open while you ride. You have to be at least 1.2 metres tall to ride The Rack.

At Blackpool, the Pepsi Max Big One cost £12 million and opened in 1994. It is one of the tallest, fastest coasters in Europe. Rising to 235 feet high, reaching speeds of 85 mph, this is a true thrill ride.

Ice Blast In 1997, the IceBlast opened. On this ride, riders are catapulted up a 210-ft tower at a speed of 80 mph before experiencing a free fall descent. The 2004 ride Bling opened where riders are lifted 100 feet above the ground and spun on large gondolas in three different directions that cause riders to feel the pull of 2.5 g’s.

Perhaps the most incredible ride at Blackpool, however is Infusion, a suspended looping roller coaster that maneuvers through fountains, jets, and right next to a gushing waterfall. It is definitely not for the timid.

Getting Into Radio Control

Fancy yourself as a model flyer or as a model race car demon? Radio control hobbies are amongst the most addictive probably because of the adrenalin rush you get! The sheer buzz of landing that warbird safely or taking that corner at speed in your drift car is one you cannot help but want more of.

Radio control hobbies are varied from beautiful yachts gracefully sailed on lakes to gliders silently riding the air currents and on to screaming drift cars and even huge model jet airliners. The common trait being they are all controlled remotely from a handheld radio transmitter.

Radio control models have been around since the 1950′s and getting better all the time with advances in circuit technology and battery technology allowing more and more dependability and control. As transistor technology has miniaturized and chips have become cheaper more has been achievable at lower power requirements. Modern RC models use 2.4 gigahertz transmission systems making them less susceptible to interference from other radio sources.

Before you leap into a purchase however there are a few things to think about and clearly these vary with the particular flavor of RC you are smitten with.

The idea of getting airborne fast is an attractive one but without the right preparation and training it could well prove to be a short and expensive flight. It really is best to learn to fly with someone else, better still with an instructor who can start you off with a simulator before moving on to a buddy box system which is really a dual control system, one for you the student and one for the instructor to get you out of trouble.

Likewise with a radio controlled car – where are you going to use it without risking an expensive crash? There is absolutely no point in purchasing a screamer of a drift car without a deserted car park or basketball court to use it on. A monster truck on the other hand would be boring to use on such a surface, you need some rough ground for that baby.

Then you need to think whether electric or gas powered models are going to be right for you. They both have their pros and cons. Bear in mind gas powered models tend to be powerful and noisy but do require constant tuning. This is not as onerous as it sounds, just something to get used to. Electric models are quiet and lighter but batteries can be expensive, even allowing for the re-use you get with rechargeables.

The ability to get spares for your model should also be a factor in your decision making, no matter how careful you are you will have accidents and you will need spares!

Talk to other hobbyists before you make your choice and talk to your local hobby shop. The guys there are always looking to talk about their hobby because they’re fanatics themselves and they want to promote their hobby by bringing new recruits into the fold, the marvelous world of radio control.

can you put a car engine in a boat?

hi i am starting a project on a yacht in which i am converting it to a power boat i want to put a v8 but i dont know can anyone help me please thanks?

Marine engines are usually tuned more like an industrial engine you would find in a generator, hydraulic pump or compressor. The cam, internal seals and fuelling will be optimised for constant load and engine speed, unlike a vehicle that spends very little time under hard acceleration, but quite a lot at part throttle, coasting and over-run down hills. Fuel systems of all types are modified so there is no chance for fuel to enter the bilge – unlike a car when it will simply disappear down and out the back. Starters and ignition systems are shielded to prevent ignition of vapours down low in the boat, and most fasteners and fittings must be exchanged for stainless and other rust-proof types. earthing becomes supercritical on boats as even the tiniest amount of stray current can cause serious corrosion in just hours. Few car electrical systems are build so that the engine and everything it is bolted to is NOT used as a common earth – in a boat no part of the boat must ever be used as an earth – all wiring is pair positive/return – again to prevent any possible stray current occurring. Oil scavenging and heat transfer must be improved – often sump cooling is used, and few modern car engines have so much extra metal in the block and head the raw water cooling is even an option. The altered angle of the engine might need new sump pick-ups, and may require adapter plates to re-level carbies – not an issue with diesels which are far superior to any petrol engine for economy and safety. The cost tends to be much higher to set up initially for a diesel, but the lifespan and safety is well worth it. For complete high performance racing a highly tuned big-bore V8 is pretty impressive, but if this yacht is not a light planing type it will be pointless.

if you give us a link to the yacht you are considering it might be easier to get a few answers and suggestions.

Good luck.

A Guide To Selling Your Yacht

There are three key fundamental elements to selling your yacht; enlist the services of a yacht broker, present your yacht in good condition and set the price at market value.

Presentation

First impressions are very important and buyers expect to see a well maintained vessel both inside and out. A badly presented boat will significantly diminish in value. Work on the exterior of your craft to get it looking clean and appealing to buyers. Have her looking like new with a wax and a polish tending to any poor varnish work.

Just as you would if you were selling a house, have a good de-clutter of the interior and remove any personal belongings making sure everything is clean and tidy. Check that the bilges are dry and fresh to avoid a damp and musty smell that may be off-putting to buyers. Get the hull as clean as you can get it paying attention to detail, and hire professionals if necessary.

Engine and Mechanics

Before you bring buyers on board make sure the yacht is in satisfactory working order. Keep sufficient fuel to ensure services operate and be prepared for prospective buyers to test everything on board. Make sure the lights, radio, autopilot, toilets, water systems and other amenities are all in good working order as any defects could encourage buyers to make a lower offer. If the bilges are dirty, clean them as an oil spill can give the impression of an oil leak. Keep the engine room clean and organize a service, if the last one was a while ago. Above all else ensure everything is presentable and in working condition.

Price

To avoid setting the wrong price for your yacht, a common mistake made by many unaided vendors, always do your market research. An unrealistic price that does not reflect your yachts true value is likely to discourage potential buyers. Do not be temped to set a high price with a view to lowering the price through negotiations. There is plenty of choice on the market for used boats and if you price too high this could result in your yacht being passed up in favour of a more reasonably priced vessel or worst still your yacht could remain unsold for months on end, whilst still costing you money. The age of the yacht, condition and accessories all need to be taken into account when comparing other similar yachts for sale. The initial asking price must be checked regularly which is why it’s best to seek the advice of a yacht broker to get an honest appraisal of the current market value of your yacht. Even the most well presented vessel will not sell quickly if the price is not right.

Documentation

The more paperwork you can provide the better. Assemble all the manuals and service history you have for your craft and store them in a safe place. Make copies for the broker and keep manuals onboard for prospective buyers. Appropriate paperwork should include a Declaration of Conformity (if built after 16th June, 1998), and the original sales invoice which will show that VAT has been paid.

There is also advertising/marketing of the vessel and a pre-sale survey to consider. The process of selling your yacht should not be rushed into and as a seller you will undoubtedly benefit from the expertise and skill of a yacht brokers selling service who will work to ensure you a successful sale.

A “sun yacht” is a spacecraft with a large sail that is pushed by sunlight. Although such a push is tiny in everyday circumstances, it can be large enough to send the spacecraft outward from the Sun on a cost-free but slow trip. Suppose that the spacecraft has a mass of 800 kg and receives a push of 12 N.
(a) What is the magnitude of the resulting acceleration?

(b) If the craft starts from rest, how far will it travel in 1 day?

(c) How fast will it then be moving?

i got part a right the answer is .015m/s^2

Equations of the previous two posters are correct, but……

The solar sail actually is pushed by sunlight, not solar wind (which is the movement of particles ejected by the Sun)

Photons of light have energy and momentum even though they don’t have mass. When a photon of sunlight is absorbed, the momentum of the photon is transferred to the solar sail. If the solar sail is reflective (which it is, naturally), momentum is also transferred when a photon is ejected back the opposite direction of the original photon from the Sun.

While the equations above are correct, they’re not realistic. As the spacecraft increases its velocity away from the Sun, the apparent frequency (and the accompanying energy and momentum) decrease due to Doppler Shift. The intensity of the light also decreases as you move further from the Sun. That means a steadily decreasing acceleration rate in reality. Because of the slow rate of acceleration in the first place, it’s going to take a long time to notice the decrease (which is why you can get away with a ‘constant’ acceleration at least for a class problem), but it will limit the top speed attainable by the spacecraft. Unless…..

You use a laser to propel the light powered spacecraft. With a laser, the amount of diffusion is extremely small, meaning the intensity of the light isn’t significantly decreasing as you move further away from the source (you still have to live with Doppler Shift). This is the idea behind propelling vehicles up a space elevator (if any material could ever be constructed to withstand the forces that would be put on a space elevator).
