help buying 50mm nikon lens?

Lately I’ve been wanting to get a 50 mm lens for my Nikon d300. I am a total beginner and do not know much, or anything at all about cameras or photography in general. I have two lens for my d300, an AF-S DX Nikkor 18-70mm and an AF Nikkor 35mm. I was wondering, should I get a 50mm lens? If so, which brand, kind of lens should I buy? Should I buy a zoom lens or just a normal lens?

50mm Nikkors are very sharp but I don’t suggest buying it. Your present lens are more than enough for doing what you might do with this lens.

Buy the lens that you need in future and not now. Buy the lens when you know what exactly you need and for what.

Nikkor 18-200mm Vr

Nikkor 18-200mm Vr
What is the main difference between 18-200mm VR & 70-300mm VR Nikkor lenses…??…?

Also i need a bit of an advise…

I am planning to buy a D7000 and i’m getting 18-105 VR lens with that …I have asked people and they say its not really much..Also i’m not really the kind who’d change his camera or lens very often…so i am thinking of not taking that lens and taking a 18-200mm or 70-300mm lens instead…Is it a good decision?? Please tell me which one to go for as an ‘allrounder kinda’ lens…

The nikkon shop is really not able to advise me on this..

Thankyou for your time..!

The best all round lens out of that lot would be the 18-200mm. I bought my D300 with that lens & its good enough for most stuff, until you get a need for more specialist lenses.

The 70-300mm is going to be a bit restricted in tight spaces as the minimum focal length of 70mm will mean you’d have to back up a fair bit to get everything in & you may not be able to. I certainly wouldn’t class it as an ‘all rounder’ lens.

The 18-200mm will go from wide angle to telephoto, the 70-300mm is midrange to telelephoto.

suggested price for used Nikkor lens?

I’m considering buying a used Nikon Nikkor lens, 24-85mm, f2.8-f4 d IF

http://www.photographyreview.com/cat/lenses/35mm-zoom/nikon/PRD_84849_3128crx.aspx

Nikon lens with zoom + pseudo macro function, aperture ring. Lens does not have a seperate focusing motor, so autofocusing is slower and a little noisier. overall, fast good quality lens.
sells at about $550 these days. The fellow I’m getting it off has had it for about a year and its in good condition. What should I pay for it?

I have that lens and the macro function is not pseudo … A macro lens is one that will shoot photos with a 1:1 to 1:2 image to subject ratio … the 24-85 will focus to 1:2 ratio.

If the lenses is in good condition then offer him $400. If he has a UV filter on the lens you can be sure he has taken at least a nominal attempt to protect it. Take the filter off and look at the front element and look for any scuffing. If there is any, offer $300 .. while it may not be noticeable except when shooting into the light source, under most conditions, the lens should perform well.

Mine has been used a lot over the six years I have owned it and it is still an excellent lens (my new 24-70 mm f/28 has become my primary lens now, but it cannot focus to a 1:2 macro ratio)

Enjoy your new lens

Can this lens be used as a macro lens?

This is the lens I’m looking at- it has a really good aperture (using it for shaped bokeh), which is the main reason I want it. I was just wondering if it can also be used as a macro lens, or would I need to buy a dedicated lens? What is it exactly that macro lenses do that others can’t?

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Nikon+-+AF-S+DX+Nikkor+35mm+f/1.8+Lens+for+Nikon+F-Mount+Digital+SLR+Cameras/9542328.p?skuId=9542328&productCategoryId=pcmcat195200050001&id=1218121951399

Macro lenses are those that are designed for close focus. The classical definition is that it can create an image that is 1:1 or more.

Almost any lens can be used with extension tubes. These are simply hollow tubes that serve to separate the lens from the sensor – like backing a projector away from the wall.

Extension tubes will give you lots of magnification, but also waste a lot of the light that they capture, making them dark. Depth of field can be measured in millimeters or less.

Counter-intuitively, a longer focal length gives you LESS magnification. But at the same time, it increases your standoff distance from the subject.

For the technically minded, magnification = mm extension / mm of focal length. And light is lost as the inverse of the square. X2 magnification loses light as a function the inverse of 2 squared. That means that only 1/4 of the light gets through – this is why extension tubes are so dark.

Use a wide angle on extension tubes and you may find that the lens bumps into the subject and is still not close enough to be in focus!

Think in terms of adding light (you’ll need it) with external flash or reflectors – both from the side, because you’ll often cast a shadow over your subject.

Take a look at my website at www.macpheronstudios.com and look under the fine art section. Most (maybe all) of those flower shots were taken with a telephoto lens on extension tubes.

Macro shooting is a lot of fun – experiment and ENJOY!

Nikon D90 review

One of the key attractions this month had to be the Nikon D90, which is also the costliest camera we’ve tested so far. Nikon has brought in the D90 to replace the trusted D80. The D80 was one of the best upper-entry level to midrange cameras from Nikon.

The D90 then has a lot to prove before it can earn its place. Going through the D90’s key features, it certainly looks impressive. The D90 utilises a 12.3-MP CMOS sensor going up from the D80’s 10.2-MP CCD sensor. The sensor size remains unchanged. Most entry-level cameras are supplied with an 18 to 55-mm lens which can be quite limiting to the kinds of photos you can take. We received the camera with a Nikkor DX 18 to 105-mm VR zoom lens.

This makes a good all-purpose kit for wide-angle and telescopic shooting. The shape and size of the D90 is somewhat larger than the D60 we saw a few months back. It’s a bit heavier than the D60 and also the D80 itself. The body is plasticy, but feels extremely sturdy and the buttons are great as expected on any Nikon D-SLR.

The D90 now comes with a 3-inch screen that is incredibly vibrant and crisp. The other thing that makes the Digital Camera interesting is the inclusion of Live View that allows you to use the LCD screen to focus.

This is a feature rarely found on D-SLRs. The D90 is undoubtedly one of the easiest cameras to operate, if you have that a basic knowledge of using a decent point-and-shoot camera. All the functions of the camera such as ISO, white balance, exposure metering and focusing modes can be accessed by holding down the respective buttons and rotating the jog dial. Shutter speed and aperture size have dedicated dials.

It’s very difficult to criticise the D90 on quality as well. The 12.3-MP CMOS sensor does its job well. Photos turn out crisp across the entire aperture range. The lens isn’t made for macro photography, so you’ll have difficulty with up-close shots. Mind you, great close-ups can be shot by moving back and zooming into the target. Good depth of field can be achieved easily too. The flash is powerful and good enough for indoor photography every now and then.

The Auto mode works well along with the autofocus feature. Focusing is instantaneous and there is no delay whatsoever. There are a few autofocus hiccups every now and then, but nothing that can’t be fixed using the other auto-focusing bracket modes. As expected from any D-SLR, the manual mode gives you total control of the camera. You won’t be disappointed with the D90, if you like to select a scenario preset either — a dial for doing that is present.

Another new feature hardly ever seen on D-SLRs is video recording. The D90 can capture up to 1280×720 resolution videos at 24 frames per second. What makes it even more special is that you can zoom and focus manually while shooting videos. The video quality is great and the frame rate quite stable but you will need to buy a fast SD/SDHC card for it.

We’d be lying if we said that we weren’t impressed with the D90. It’s filled with surprises. The camera is incredibly simple to use, it has the performance, the features and is undoubtedly miles ahead of the D80 in every aspect. Nikon has yet another winner on its hands and we highly recommend this if you have a serious interest in photography and also the money.

The Nikon D90 along with its lens is priced at a whopping Rs. 89,890. The body by itself can be bought for Rs. 69,950. This makes the D90 almost as costly as the D300. It makes better sense if you spend more and go for the D300 instead.

Nikon’s lens are known to be cheaper than some other brands, so buying just a body and then a good lens can also be a good move. If you don’t need the Live View or the video recording or even the small changes Nikon has made, then the older D80 is a better buy, especially with its more wallet-friendly price.

Should I invest in a Nikkor AF-S DX18-200mm VR lens for my D5000, or a Nikkor AF-S DX 55-200mm VR lens?

I have been looking to invest in a better lens than the regular 18-55mm kit lens that my Nikon D5000 came in with. I don’t need any large telephoto lens or a landscape lens, just anything that’s a step above the kit lens for everyday use. Based on the cost of these two lenses, and the fact that I already have a 18-55mm lens, which would be the most beneficial and more efficient for my needs?

I used to have the canon equivalent to all of these lenses. At first I had the 18-55 and the 55-250.
While this was a good set up, I got tried of having to constantly switch lenses. It finally boiled down to a trip I took and I realized I needed to pick only 1 lens to take.
So….I went out and bought the 18-200 and never looked back. Sold the 18-55 and the 55-250 on craigslist. In my opinion there is no better “walk around’ lens than the 18-200mm. Covers a plenty wide range for both wide angle and zoom, and you don’t have to constantly swap lenses, increasing the chance of dust/dirt entering your camera each time you do.
Good luck
