Radio Controlled Devices – Their History Revealed
Radio controlled devices have gained popularity as hobby items apart from being used for various other purposes. Building, modifying and driving radio controlled vehicles is a favorite pastime of radio control enthusiasts. The sport involves displaying the skills of the person in handling the device, efficiently.
Remote or radio controlled devices are controlled from a remote distance. Jagdish Chandra Bose was perhaps the first to demonstrate remote controlled activity when he set alight gun powder to strike a gong using electromagnetic radiation, from a distance. Tesla was the first to show the use of a transmitter and receiver to remotely control a ship. He showed how mechanical gadgets could be controlled using the wireless principle in the year 1898. He also began the construction of a wireless tower that remained incomplete due to lack of finance. Tesla can be said to have created the basis for the design of radio controlled devices which are in use today. The American inventor Armstrong said, “The world will long have to wait for a mind equal to Tesla’s, a mind of such creative possibilities and such wealth of imagination.”
Remote controlled devices are also known commonly as RC devices- RC meaning radio controlled. Dr. William and Walter Good, two twin brothers created and flew the first radio controlled airplane in 1937. Dr. William was a radio specialist whereas his brother Walter built aero models. They combined both their skills to create a radio controlled airplane. The principle of radio control has also been used in the World War II. From the 1960s, transistors were available, and this revolutionized the circuits to make them compact and light.
Sometime during the mid or late 1960s, the British company Mardave, began producing the first commercially feasible remote controlled cars. The first gas powered or nitro cars were sold in the early 1970s in Leicester, where the company was based. Radio controlled devices need a control transmitter, a throttle trigger and wheels for turning, while the receiver is located in the body of the toy. These models run on either electricity or fuel. Electrical speed control is used in electrical models, whereas radio control mechanisms are used in fuel control systems to regulate the fuel input.
Toy grade devices are usually assembled models available at retail shops and are much cheaper than hobby grade models. The toy grade models use electric power and run on batteries. Hobby grade radio controlled devices are more serviceable and durable, but are very expensive. They run on fuel like gasoline or nitro and unlike toy models which are ready made, these require assembling of the various components.
RC devices come in the form of cars, airplanes, boats and helicopters. Remote controlled cars are used for racing and this is a very popular sport among car enthusiasts. Small cars and toys are used for indoor games. Radio control technology is combined with robotics to create various devices used in international robotics contests held in Japan.
There are numerous uses for radio control technology and vehicles are only one aspect of it. Radio controlled hobbies can be enjoyed in many ways and combined with robotics, they open up wider possibilities for the hobbyists.

How do you add RC to a model sailboat?
where can I find clear diagrams for adding radio control servos to a model sailboat?
The first question is: Is your model suitable for RC? (NOT all models are.)
There are NO SUCH THINGS as “clear diagrams” since each boat is different. Those specifically designed for RC include the necessary information!
Is it a Kit, Built from plans, or Ready made?
In the case of the first 2, if it can be set up for RC, the plans should indicate this.
If it is ready made, or does NOT indicate suitability, you would be on your own.
While I design and fly RC aircraft, some of the necessary controls are similar.
First, you have to preserve the balance of the boat when installing RC gear. Depending on the size you may have a slight problem installing sufficient antenna. (The antenna can be disguised in most cases as parts of the rigging, if you can’t run it up the main mast.)
You should use pull-pull on the rudder control.
How many controls do you need is also a consideration.
Sailboats are somewhat limited in how many controls may be needed, and what they are used for. (I saw a model destroyer that was steam powered and used 3 separate transmitters to have sufficient channels to control everything! That INCLUDED “live” weapons, both guns and depth charges.)
I have seen sailboats with: sails (up-down), boom control (how far it could swing), auxilary engine (electric), anchor (up-down), as well as rudder control!
The choice is yours.

The IRS has a “Hobby Rule” make money 3 out of 5 years.
What happens if you lose money 4 of 5 years? or lose 5 of 5 years. If you own a yacht charter fishing business, that is one thing but what about a startup company like Mortgage that is not fun!
The hobby loss rules are not hard and fast rules. The IRS leaves a lot of room for interpretation in determining whether a business is considered a “hobby” subject to the hobby loss rules. You really have to look at the facts and circumstances of each particular case to see whether the IRS will consider the business a hobby or a true business. Some of the facts they may consider is:
1. Do you have a storefront (i.e. separate business location) and not working from your home?
2. Is this your sole source of income or do you have a “day job” to pay the bills?
3. Does the business require a specialized license (i.e. real estate license or certification) or specialized knowledge?
4. Is the business set up as a “true” separate entity (also covers separate business location, separate business accounts, DBA license, paying payroll taxes, etc.)?

Radio Control Boats – A Beginner’s Guide
As a beginner buying radio control boats, it can sometimes prove difficult to know where to begin in finding the right one. Below is a guide to choosing and buying radio control boats that beginner radio control hobbyists should find useful.
When it comes to accessories for your radio control boat, you will require at least a 2-channel radio control system. You may opt for the stick type transmitters in which the left up/down lever controls the speed, while the right left/right lever controls the boat’s direction. There are also pistol-type radio control systems in which the throttle is controlled using a gun-like trigger, while you use a wheel to control the direction of your boat. Most ready to run – RTR radio control boats come complete with a 2-channel radio control system.
When it comes to speed, you could go for the fast nitro radio control boats which offer out-of-the-box speeds that range between 25-35 mph. Alternatively, you may opt for an electric radio control boat with an out of box speed of 15 – 20+ mph, which is not only fast, but noiseless as well. This will enable you to drive it in areas where nitro boats are not permitted due to noise ordinances. If its relaxation you are after, you may want to go for the RC sailboats instead
Nitro powered radio control boats can run for long periods of time and only require a quick refueling before getting back to the water. Depending on the size of the boat and the battery pack, electric powered radio control boats will normally run for 10-15 minutes. Smaller boats will on the other hand run for 30-45 minutes per battery pack. Sailboats depend only on the batteries for the radio control system, which normally lasts for half an hour to one hour per battery charge.

I need a audio setup that is simple but with a little extra.?
I got an 1965 Oldsmobile land yacht..She is a beauty but original radio. Don’t want to mess with the dash. I would like to build a box in the trunk to hold stereo, 6×9 speakers in the rear dash but control it from the front. CD Changer? I understand the new stereos play mp3′s with a usb connections. Is there a wireless remote to control volume and stations and CD’s any suggestions appreciate the help
controlling from the front is really where the issue is if you have it in the trunk. the remote wires simply are not usually that long. however, you may be able to mount it under the seat. the wires from the deck to amps, subs, and speakers can be as long as you need, the remote wire however is usually limited in length, and i have heard lots of poor reviews even on expensive wireless models, they just don’t work well.
But if i may share a link with you to a radio company that may change your mind about not changing the dash. see they build new technology radios that duplicate the 60′s style radios, with custom face plates to match the cars original, just like yours. here is the link.

If it were my car i would totally not want to loose the 1960′s flavor with a new radio, hell i have a jeep and built a large system around the factory deck to not change the look, but i would consider something from the above link if that were my land yacht.
