Also on this site is helpful information about ADHD. Along with other useful information available on this site, is a series of videos posted under FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions.) This series covers a wide range of topics all focused on Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, each video answering a particular question regarding ADHD. The scripts for the videos are written and narrated by a clinical professional who is experienced with ADHD patients and delivers his narration with a high degree of knowledge and professionalism.
The second video in this informative series on ADHD, focuses on the possible causes of ADHD. The narrator explains that while scientists believe that not all of the causes for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder have been identified, like many other conditions, it is caused by a combination of factors. He lists the factors being studied by scientists as causes of ADHD, then addresses each one. The issues named are: genetics, brain injuries, social, environmental, nutritional, and neurological.
To me, the most notable causes mentioned were: environmental and neurological. The clinician states regarding environmental influences, that ADHD may be demonstrated by people who have unstructured environments in their growing up years including lack of discipline. Neurologically, persons with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder experience low neurological brain activity. Normal brain activity while reading or concentrating increases beta wave activity. However, a person with ADHD during a time of trying to concentrate, doesn’t increase the beta wave activity. Instead, theta waves, the daydreaming part of the brain waves, are increased. For example, in school, when children with ADHD are supposed to be concentrating and accomplishing mental work, they are daydreaming with their theta wave brain activity, instead of using their beta brain waves .
