How misting systems are useful in mining industry?

Misting systems are widely used in many industries like agriculture, food, animal husbandry etc. similarly it is also utilized in mining industry too. This is because dust suppression is an important requirement in the mining scenario to control the airborne particles that are floating around the site. It is essentially important to control fugitive dust for the safety of employees as well as equipment protection. Hence the mining industries make use of misting systems as dust control methods and a majority of the companies have been following this method.

In the mining industry, misting systems are utilized for a variety of application of dust suppression, particularly the coal mining industry. Some of the application of mist line systems would be conveyor dust suppression, crushing dust suppression, underground haul road dust suppression, material transfer dust suppression and machinery dust suppression. These are the general things for which misting systems are being used in the industry.

During the mining process, dust has been raised continuously and the misting systems thus become essential equipment for the proper functioning. Potentially dangerous levels of dust would be raised during all aspects of mining process and without the different types of dust suppression it becomes virtually impossible for proper vision. It is crucial as proper vision is something that ensures the safety of the employees at the mining site.

Different types of misting systems are used at the mining sites like air assisted atomizer nozzle that use a combination of water and compressed air to generate a fine mist. This mist would be propelled further than normal. There are specific types of misting nozzles called as cluster nozzles that are made up of multiple nozzles to produce larger mist cloud than could be achieved with the individual nozzles. Then there are the general purpose spray nozzles that can be operated under low pressure to provide a wetting mist. This nozzle is generally used to ensure that dust is not produced at the various stages of the mine production.

For some mine sites straight misting is not enough and in that case further technological features would be added to the process. In some particular cases the performance of the misting dust suppression is enhanced by the inclusion of an ionic wetting agent in the water. This dust control chemical has the effect of creating an additional bonding agent that is added to the process. In that way the dust particles and the water mist droplets have a better chance of combining together. Above ground mining operations also require large scale dust suppression and earlier baghouse collection systems were used at the sites. Due to baghouse fires and explosions, the method has been successfully replaced by misting systems. Moreover environment safety has been assured by dry foggers that have proven effective in suppressing coal dust.

The misting and fogging are not new technologies and they have been demonstrated as a cost effective method of controlling fugitive dust since a long time. The best part is that misting not only suppresses dust, it has been shown to be the cost effective method available.
