Booking a Holiday, Tour or Vacation in Japan
In my capacity as the UK Director of Operations for One World Tours Limited, I am often asked about the destinations I have been to. I try to give a good opinion on those places and offer some helpful advice. Here then, are my top suggestions for sites to take in during your holiday in Japan.
Made up of four major islands and surrounded by more than 4,000 smaller islands Japan has coastlines with varied scenery. The country also offers imposing mountains, which are very often volcanic and amazing valleys that encompass the onlooker with the magical world of nature. Being covered with over 70% of forest and mountains makes it unsuitable for any inhabitants. That however does not alter the fact that Japan is the thirtieth most densely populated country in the world.
With many hot springs in this country, they have given rise to some stunning resorts.
Tokyo, Japan’s city is a modern city of which is full of wonderful diversity. There are many sacred shrines and temples that hold there own amongst the imposing might of the skyscrapers.
The Tokyo Disney Resort in Chiba, is a holiday and recreation resort which has become the most popular and most visited theme park in the world since it was opened in 1983.
Mount Fuji is stunningly impressive and standing at a stunning 12,388 ft., has earned it the title of the tallest mountain in Japan. The Japanese revere this majestic mountain and use it as a symbol to the very spirit of their country. The best viewing place for Mount Fuji is Hakone and although it is almost always shrouded in clouds on a clear day the peak becomes visible.
The adventurous among you will be pleased to know that there are 6 ascents to the peak of the mountain of varying difficulties. Depending on the weather you can climb in the months of April to October although the “official” climbing season is from mid-July to the end of August.
Lake Ashi can be found in the volcanically active Izu National Park in Japan. The lake is breathtaking and was apparently formed in the caldera of Mt. Hakone 3000 years ago after the volcano’s last eruption. This is a popular tourist attraction which is well known for its hot springs and stunning views of Mt. Fuji on a clear day.
You will have the opportunity to take cruise boats resembling pirate ships along the lake where some small towns are located on the shore.
Nikko is a small city at the entrance to Nikko National Park. Here you can experience the famous Toshogu shrine which is Japan’s most elaborately decorated shrine.
Nikko National Park offers one of the most scenic landscapes, boasting mountains, stunning lakes, impressive waterfalls, hot springs. You can get close to the wild monkeys on one of the many walking trails.
Hiroshima is the largest city in the Chugoku region on the largest of Japan’s islands and was rebuilt after World War II.
You cannot mention Hiroshima without it conjuring up the reminder that it was the first place in history to be subjected to an atomic bomb by the United States of America.
Thankfully in modern times, new buildings have grown all over the city. Now proclaimed as a City of Peace by the Japanese parliament, Hiroshima has become the seemingly appropriate place for holding international conferences on peace.

Recommendations on a 14 to 16 foot Jet Boat?
I am considering a 14 to 16 foot Jet Boat like Sea Rays Jet Rayder, Sea Doo, Yamaha, Sugar Sands, Bayliner Jazz and etc. I live on the Gulf Coast but I am looking for ones for sale on Craigs List inland so I can find a freshwater boat built in the 1990′s. I have seen a few that look good priced from anywhere between $1000 and $3500.
I have never owned a jet or been on one.
I would appreciate any pros and cons on any brands that you guys have had experiences with.
Jet boats operate exactly like your typical sea doos, waverunners, etc… They lack “traction” from the start but are very efficient at moving you through the water. They tend to hop and cavitate quite a bit, but if you’re looking for a little water scooter that you can fit a few people in… go for it. If you’re going to run it in the salt water, make sure you’re protected properly against corrosion. BTW… if you find a good boat with engine problems and everything else is in working order and the price is good… it’s not too expensive to get a remanufactured engine. I bought an 800cc yamaha motor from SBT and had it installed for just under $1000. Good luck, they are great fun for a small boat.

How powerful a wind turbine do I need to recharge my electric boat?
I am building a two-seater, electric catamaran, 21 ft. long, about 8 knots top speed, no sails, just two electric DC engines. I am aiming at a range of about 20 miles before it needs recharging, and my only recharging device will be a wind turbine. I’ve seen they do about 100 – 400 Watts when they are the marine type which usually attaches to sailboats; how long would it take for such a turbine to replenish energy in my boat, would anyone know? I’m hopeless with these things, but I still love doing them.

If you shoot for a very efficient design, it might work OK. I wouldn’t plan on carrying the turbine with me on the boat. If you could leave it somewhere & hook-up to it when you get there, it would be more practical.
8 knots isn’t too fast. 20 miles at 8 knots is about 2 hours transit time. Two 1/2 HP motors would work. Human powered catamarans have gone much faster than 8 knots & one man is about 1/2 HP or 375 Watts.
If the motors and propellers are efficient, then a total of 600 Watts might do it, assuming two passengers.
Let’s say the turbine generates 200 Watts. Then you’d have to recharge for about 6 hours.
I’ve assumed 100% efficiency throughout. The true efficiencies are pretty high with good equipment, but not 100%; so figure 7 or 8 hours of recharging.
