What to do if bitten by a snake far from help?
Suppose my friend and I are backpacking. We’re 15 miles from our car when (ouch!) my friend gets bitten on the leg by a rattlesnake. I have a Sawyer extractor snake bite kit, which I use to get out as much venom as possible. But then what?
Do I:
a) Leave my friend by himself while I go for help?
b) Help my friend walk back to the car? (He’s too heavy for me to carry.)

To clarifiy a few points:
Out in the wilderness, you are usually out of cell phone range, so that might not be an option.
There are no other people around.
The place is not accessible by car.
Sucking out the poison by mouth as is the old method can be very dangerous. If the person sucking out the poison has any sore or cut in their mouth they too will be poisoned.
carrying a snake bite kit helps but is not quite as good as claimed
There is evidence that by using a high voltage low amperage DC voltage on the bite can neutralize the venom. There are products on the market that are light and easy to carry. If you should be able to get to your car use a spark plug wire and shock the bite.
Apply a tourniquet to keep the poison from spreading immediately and do not loosen it (by loosening as one person below says every 5 minutes the poison will spread through the system more rapidly- — Do NOT loosen) and head out slowly not running or fast walking. Get to your car as soon as possible and to the hospital.
