Venom Bags
What kind of snake is this? (with picture)?

We caught it last night crawling on the wall near the trash bag. uncle was scared so he tried catching it, but he got it stressed. It was pretty long, (I’m not sure because my boyfriend kept it), but I’m sure it’s more than a feet long and it was fast. It jumps. And it bit my boyfriend. It was a small wound, but we want to make sure if it has venom or what. Please help.
The previous answerer is correct it is not a garter snake most definitely. And it’s also definitely not venomous.
It looks to me like a species of rat snake. Bullsnakes and pine snakes have lighter heads and more defined patterning, so I doubt it is one of these. If it is 1-2 (or maybe a little longer) feet (and you live in the east U.S.) then it’s likely a young black rat snake in the process of turning dark. It could also be a very dark specimen of texas rat snake though if you live closer to that area. With more pictures it would be easier to tell.

And here’s a black rat snake. Note they start out grey with dark patterns and fade to entire black backs with light bellies as they age, so yours could be an in between phase.

here’s my attempt to find a picture of one with more patterning before they turn solid black…

These snakes are rodent eaters and grow 4-6 feet long as adults. They do always bite when threatened usually, but most will calm down after handling.
