Rechargeable batteries?

Daniel B asked:

Hi,
I just recently boat an RC boat. After charging the ni-cad battery for approx. 2hrs, the boat didn’t work. The instructions state that the battery should be charged for 5 hours. Should it make a difference if I only charged it for 2hrs? Or do you suspect there is an issue with the boat/battery?
Thanks
So, there’s a chance I’ve runied it?!

You need to charge the battery for at least as long as the instructions say, if you charge it for less time, the battery will likely be useless forever.

Yes if you don’t charge the battery the first time for the full time it won’t be able to hold a charge.

Since you initially charged the battery for 2 hours and tried the system briefly (apparently), it is very unlikely that you damaged the battery. The serious problem arises when a new battery is run down to nothing without having ever been charged. This can quickly produce a situation where the battery will not subsequently accept charging current, and that’s the end of that! Since you did give it some initial charge, this does not appear to be your situation, and the battery would not have been deep-discharged by venturing operation for a few minutes.

There may yet be a battery/charger problem, but the actions you described would not have caused it (unless it HAD worked and you ran the batteries down!).
