What is the best teleconverter for Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8G VR II AF-S ED-IF Zoom-Nikkor Lens?
I dont have $7,000 for a prime 400 so i want a good long reach teleconverter for my nikon D80, any suggestions for a teleconverter for Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8G VR II AF-S ED-IF Zoom-Nikkor Lens?
Im assuming it will turn my 70-200 into a 340? so that would only make it a little farther reach than my 70-300mm 5.6?
or would it be better for me just to use my 70-300mm 5.6? and not spend the $400 on a teleconverter for the 2.8
i heard 2x is too dark, 1.4 isnt long enough, but 1.7x is perfect, any suggestions would be great!
The first thing you need to consider is the loss of f-stops when using a teleconverter.
A 1.7X teleconverter will make your f2.8 lens perform as though the aperture was set at f4.76.
A 2.0X teleconverter will make your f2.8 lens perform as though the aperture was set at f5.6.
The Nikon site lists the TC-17E II 1.7X teleconverter as having no limitations when used with the 70-200mm f2.8 lens or the 80-200mm f2.8 lens. It is not compatible with the 70-300mm f5.6 lens.
The TC-20E II and TC-20E III 2.0X teleconverters have no limitations when used with either of the f2.8 zooms. It is not compatible with the 70-300mm f5.6 lens.
The TC-20E II or III will make your 70-200mm lens a 140-400mm lens. If your use is outdoors on a reasonably bright day the 2 stop loss in aperture shouldn’t be a problem. Use of a tripod is highly recommended.
