Which is better 80 – 200 ED or best ( which one ? ) 70 – 300 in nikkor?
Please help me choose between 80 – 200 , 2.8 E.D and the best 70 – 300 . please also let me know which lens is the best by nikon in 70 – 300 catagory.
Between the 70-300mm lenses, I agree with Anthony that the VR version is obviously better. Whether it’s worth the higher price is a personal call. For me, it would be. Both of these versions are consumer grade lenses.
As for the 80-200mm f/2.8, Nikon also made several of these. And without exception they were professional quality. The AF problems that Anthony mentions seem to be limited to the earlirer models:

It’s hard to compare the 70-300 and 80-200 against each other however, because they excel at different things.
If you need VR or the 300mm range, the 70-300mm is your only option.
If you need f/2.8, the 80-200 is your only option. The 80-200mm is also the better lens optically. But the 70-300mm is much lighter and less conspicuous…
I just read your earlier question and considering you want to go pro and your highest priority is image quality, the 70-300 seems out of the question. In fact, your upgrade possibilities are very limited.
The only thing that beats your 80-200mm in that zoom range is the Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8.
Or for more range with the 80-200mm, get a Nikon 1.4x tele converter.
The 80-400 is another option for more range – you could sell your 80-200mm for a budget solution.
And then of course, when you make it as a pro, there’s the insanely expensive 200-400mm f/4.
