How do I tell if a non-Canon lens will fit on my Canon EOS 400D?

I am new to photography and I want to buy a Nikon lens (the AF NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8D) for my Canon EOS 400D but I don’t know how to tell if it will fit onto/be compatible with my camera. If anyone can tell me how to tell whether a lens is compatible with my camera or not, I would really appreciate it. Eg, is there a standard for the diameter of the lens? Or a standard contact position? etc. Cheers!

Not all Canon lenses will fit your camera let alone a lens from another manufacturer.

All DSLR lenses are manufacturer specific, there are adapters around, but these usually reduce functionality, may only be manual focus for instance.

There has been no ‘standard’ lens mount since the Pentax M42 screw mount lenses which finished in the early 1970′s, since then all manufacturers have gone their own way. Pentax is the only manufacturer which has backwards compatibility with earlier lenses, they can use any lens made for Pentax K mount made since 1973, even earlier with an M42 adapter. Sometimes this comes with reduced functions, if the original lens was manual focus it still will be, if it was designed for stop down metering again it still will be, but they will all work and they will all have antishake as its built into the camera body not the lens. So there is a massive resource of cheap (£20.00 to £50.00) high quality lenses out there for Pentax owners.
