Help with manual and auto focus camera lenses?
I’m new to photography, and signed up for a photography class at my high school.
I already know the body I’m buying – a Nikon FM10. I’ve heard it’s great for students and amateurs.
For my class, I need a 35mm manual SLR camera and lens. I was wondering if auto focus lenses could somehow be used manually?
I only ask because I’m having trouble finding the one I want – a Nikon 50mm/1.8 manual lens. I’ve heard that such exists, but I’m having trouble finding a used one that isn’t too expensive for me – $150 or less.
Is there another manual lens that’s good for a beginner and compatible with a Nikon FM10?
I was also wondering about the Micro-NIKKOR 55mm f/2.8 lens – good for beginners?
I’d like to do nice close up nature shots, but have the ability to use it without having a close up shot every time.

Since you’re using a Nikon, then yes, any Nikon lens – including AF lenses – can be mounted on and used on your camera. The exception will be to make sure the lens has a traditional aperture ring – otherwise you will have no control over the lens aperture, which you will need. Avoid “G” series lenses, and pretty much any lens designed for digital. They WILL mount, will focus, but you will have a preset aperture you can’t change.
