What is a good onsen near Tokyo or Kyoto that will allow a westerner with tattoos?
So far the only thing I’ve found is Kurama Hot Spring, about 30 minutes outside Kyoto. Seems really cool, but I don’t know their policy for an american with tattoos. I know its a taboo at some places. I’m planning on being in Tokyo with day trips to Nikko and Hakone. Then I’ll be in Kyoto for 3 days. I’d be interested in an Onsen in any of these areas. Ideally I’d like something outside with nice views of Japan. It’d also be cool to go to one in Tokyo with a view of the city. An outdoor one with a view of Mt. Fuji would be amazing. Any information of tattoo friendly onsen or ones in these areas would be great.
I haven’t got anything for you, but I have heard onsens tend to be more lenient with foreigners that have tattoo (not all but a good few). Maybe it is because they want others to experience Japan.
