a thin layer of cardboard should do fine… just make sure you use more sealant then usual…
Some items can use alternate materials but some (like the head gasket) cannot. Usually in a pinch one would use an item similar to 3-M Gasket material or Permatex. It is a silicone based (rubbery) material that is suitable for some applications. It comes in tubes like tooth paste and is availiable in three distinct colors for specific applications (Red, Black and Blue) The label will tell you what it is designed to work on.
