Loudoun Insurance – Don’t Float Your Boat – Until You Know It’s Protected
Here’s an article of great summer and timely information on boat insurance from South Riding / Loudoun insurance agent in more than Allstate, Khalid Umerani … probably not relevant to our fleet, “” pathetic canoes and rowboats, but certainly applicable to all residents of Northern Virginia to keep his “real” boats over Annapolis, Solomons Island / PAX River, Ocean City and more locally, near Alexandria, Occoquan or Lake Anna.
Americans love to take to the water, providing a sense of freedom and a sense of adventure (and perhaps a crab or two!). However, navigation can have a dark side, too. According to the U.S. Coast Guard, there were 5191 boating accidents reported in 2007 and Fairfax and Loudoun County, boat owners are not immune. However, this is probably just the tip of the iceberg. The Coast Guard believes that more than 80 percent of all shipping accidents are not reported.
Given the level of risk of accidents, then one would expect boat owners looking for a way to protect themselves, but that does not seem to be the case. A study by Progressive Insurance found that 29 percent of U.S. boat owners not have a separate boat policy. That is probably because the boat owners assume that their job is covered by your personal policy or homeowners policy. This is a mistake that can cost big time.
The standard auto policy cover towing the ship from liability the option to add coverage for physical damage. The boat itself, however, is not covered for liability or damages.
Some policies offer coverage owner for physical damage to boats, but only for smaller vessels. The policy of the typical homeowner in / Chantilly South Riding areas contains a special property limit of $ 1,500 to the vessels, that does not begin with the dollar equivalent of the majority of vessels (except, perhaps, some canoes aging, kayaks or sunfish!). In addition, claims covered ship specific are also very restricted.
There are also liability coverage for boats under most homeowner policies, but again, only applies to small vessels. The only exception is a boat with outboard motor. This means that any type of boat you own that is powered by an onboard or inboard outboard motor is excluded from liability coverage under the policy of the owner.
Because the owners of most boats are aware of how big the loss of property and liability, are set to not have adequate insurance, the Institute of Institutional Risk Management (Irmi) has created a list of loss scenarios that demonstrate the need for coverage of specialized boat owners:
· Your cruise collides with a boat whose driver failed to yield the right of way, causing extensive damage to his ship. The owner of the boat did not have insurance coverage.
· An expensive bass boat you just bought is stolen from their home.
Your · 27-foot-long vessel is damaged by a major hailstorm while docked at the marina.
· Your sport fishing boat is struck by lightning, incapacitating its electrical system.
· Your friend’s son water skiing behind his boat and fell into the lake, injuring himself due to excessive boat speed.
· You neglect to cancel because another ship to avoid a collision.
· Your outboard motor explodes, seriously injuring his neighbor next door.
