The Mini-V is a hobby-grade model boat with delicate electronic components and small parts that young children and careless adults are sure to break. When operated responsibly, this boat delivers amazing speed (over 15 mph) and maneuvarability far beyond those of department- and toy-store boats. Another way this boat differs from true toy boats is that it requires periodic maintenance. Mechanical parts, from steering servo and arm to motor and propellor, will eventually wear out and need replacing. The drive shaft also needs to be greased regularly. Luckily, most parts are inexpensive, aside from the electronic speed control (ESC).

Pro Boat markets the Mini-V as “ready to run” (RTR), which I feel is a little misleading. Batteries are NOT included. To run the boat, you need eight AA batteries for the transmitter and a Pro Boat PRB1202 (or similar) 7.2-volt battery. The rechargeable Mini-V battery uses NiMH (Nickel Metal Hydride) chemistry for relatively quick charging and respectable run times. After one week of daily operation, I averaged 15 minutes of run time on each 2-hour charge. My boat has an operational range of about 250 feet, which is far enough for such a small boat. Much farther than that and you’d have a hard time seeing the little boat and, more importantly, any debris floating in the water.

    [...].

My only criticism of the Mini-V is that its radio receiver/ESC (electronic speed control) housing is not waterproof. After a week of driving my Mini-V, however, I don’t believe you can drown its electronics if you operate the boat responsibly in its intended manner. However, due to the Mini-V’s low price, I predict that a lot of inexperienced kids will flip the boat in spin-outs (VERY easy to do) and end up heartbroken due to a dead $45 ESC. Think about this before you buy one for your child. Adult supervision is definitely recommended.
